Markden Homes Welcomes Two New Apprentices

UK housebuilder Markden Homes has announced the addition of two promising apprentices to its team: Alicia Walchester and Leighton Downings.

Alicia Walchester has embarked on her apprenticeship journey after studying Business Studies at Stoke College. Recognising that full-time education wasn’t the right fit for her, Alicia proactively sought out a more hands-on, practical career path. She discovered Markden Homes through an advertisement and immediately requested an interview, demonstrating commendable initiative and determination.

Alicia brings with her a wealth of work experience, having previously held positions at Alton Towers and other businesses. Her diligence and commitment underscore her strong work ethic.

Currently rotating through various trades on-site, Alicia is evaluating potential career paths within the construction sector. She is considering options in general construction, business in construction, managerial roles, architectural pursuits, sales marketing or specific trades.

Chris Parry, Site Manager at Markden Homes, commented: “Alicia is a very professional addition to our team and one who approaches her work with a positive attitude. While Alicia is still undecided on her specific career path, I am confident that she will excel in whichever role she chooses.”

Leighton Downings joins Markden Homes from Painsley Catholic School in Cheadle. Leighton is participating in a long-term work experience placement, recommended as a beneficial opportunity for him to explore his aspirations in the building industry, particularly his interest in carpentry.

Leighton has shown remarkable enthusiasm and a keen interest in learning on-site. Though limited by his age to certain tasks, his dedication and eagerness to grow are evident.

Chris Parry said: “Leighton is doing exceptionally well. His enthusiasm and willingness to learn are commendable and I am excited to see his progress in future.

“Markden Homes is honoured to support and nurture the careers of young and aspiring professionals like Alicia and Leighton. Their tenacity and passion for the industry align perfectly with our commitment to developing the next generation of talent in construction.”

Chris Parry’s extensive experience in construction spans over 35 years, beginning as an apprentice electrician and evolving into roles such as M&E Coordinator and various supervisory and management positions. His career has taken him overseas and into housebuilding over the past two decades, where he has contributed to a wide range of projects, including apartments, houses, retirement villages and mixed-use developments. Chris has experience with high-rise buildings, traditional and timber frame construction, and complex refurbishments. His accolades include Build Quality Awards from the NHBC and LABC.
